DOC transfer method

Requirements

  • sufficient free memory in your Palm to hold the generated DOC files
  • being able to HotSync®
  • a DOC PDB file to text file format convertor tool

Procedure

Make sure the Data Xfer Type setting in the NMEA/Port config of SP is set to DOC
On your Palm open the Settings → Transfer screen and select Flights/Logs button.
Select the flight you want to transfer and hit the TRANSMIT button. The Transferring Data! Please Wait... dialog will pop up.

Exit SP and verify with the Filez tool that the flights are written to IGC file(s). You can also use a Palm DOC reader to open these IGC file(s). This step can be skipped if you don’t have the Filez or DOC reader tools
Now place your Palm in the cradle and HotSync® as usual. This will create so called Palm DOC database files in the Backup directory of the Palm Desktop directory for the current Palm user. These files have a file name convention like 47TXMVW1_igc.PDB.

Now follow one of the two methods described below to convert these DOC database files to IGC text files on your PC.

Convert DOC to IGC using DocReader

These PDB files can be converted to readable IGC files using the DocReader tool.
Under Options → Settings... of DocReader change the ‘default doc directory’ to the ‘Backup’ directory of the Palm user. Close and restart DocReader so it will reread it’s INI file containing the just changed settings.
Use menu command File → Open and select the desired PDB file you want to convert.
You should see the contents of your IGC file in the DocReader main window:
Now use the File → Save As... menu command and browse to where your want to write your IGC file. Warning do NOT save with extension .IGC just yet (as this will generate a new Palm DOC format file) but use .TXT extension.
Browse to the directory with the newly created .TXT file with Windoze Exploder and change the extension from .TXT into .IGC 1)
Repeat the previous 4 steps for the remaining PDB DOC file(s)

Convert DOC to IGC using TextSync

The PDB files resulting from the DOC transfer and HotSync® (see above) can be converted to readable IGC files using the TextSync conduit. This manual does not describe the installation of this conduit, please refer to its web site for clear instructions howto install.
In the Text Sync Manager use the New button:
Now select from the Text Bases the IGC file you’d like to convert
Make sure to check the ‘No Compression’ checkbox and (optional) select a different output file name or directory. Repeat these two steps for all flights you like to convert.
Exit Text Sync Manager and HotSync® again. The converted IGC file(s) will now “magically” appear on your PC.

Convert DOC to IGC using DOC2IGC

See http://doc2igc.sourceforge.net for this tool.

Alternative transfer methods

1) if you don’t see the .TXT extension make sure to configure Windows Explorer to also show ‘known’ extensions.
